Ranulph Fiennes, by Melanie Legge.
Melanie Legge, Tutor
Melanie has been teaching and running courses in Hampshire for 10 years. She teaches human portraiture and other forms of sculpture to a group of loyal followers. Her portraits and other works feature in collections both in the UK and overseas.
Melanie studied in Paris and then in Denmark under the acclaimed sculptor Jeanette Bronsted. She has taught in Vienna and Copenhagen.
Her portraiture exhibits a natural realism and objectivity, capturing the spirit of her subject in straightforward style. Melanie’s sculpture of Trevor Beeson, former Dean of Winchester Cathedral, displays the power and honesty representative of her work.
Her latest work, of the polar explorer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes will be unveiled at FACE2019, the Society of Portrait Sculptors next annual exhibition. Later in the year it will again be shown at the prestigious Royal Geographical Society on the 40th anniversary of the Transglobe Expedition in September.
In addition to her skills as sculptor of the human form, she makes enchanting and unusual pots in the finest translucent porcelain. These works are regularly on show at Hampshire’s Josie Eastwood Gallery, at the British Art Portfolio as well as various artistic outlets in London.
What to expect on the course
The course is suitable for all sculptors, regardless of ability.
Using clay specially selected by your tutor, you will sculpt a head from a live model. You will learn new skills, and refresh dormant ones.
Using the Casa Rosa Studio, Melanie will take each student through their own personal journey, irrespective of experience. Introducing the course, Melanie will teach the basics of clay choices, armatures and tools. As the shape of your piece is constructed, head shape, the skull and its planes and hollows will be discussed. Techniques for constructing the finer features - nose, ears, eyes and mouth - will be demonstrated and texture, tooling and finishes will be studied. The processes of life modelling, taking measurements and photographs will be outlined. We hope to include some discussion of casting, colours of bronze, resin, firing, glazing and patina. By the end of the last day, you will have an unfired sculpture which will be beyond what you ever thought you could achieve and which should leave you feeling gratified and even elated. You can either leave your piece in Spain, having taken photographs and notes to record the experience at Casa Rosa, and or you can wrap it carefully for transport back to the UK for a small additional cost.
The group will not exceed 12 sculptors. Partners may accompany sculptors and simply relax and enjoy Casa Rosa and all its facilities.

Locally Sourced Food & Wine
Casa Rosa’s orchards produce the olives, almonds, honey, pomegranates, citrus fruit and olive oil used in our catering. And in the evenings, you will be tempted with cocktails made from Casa Rosa fruit.
This year we have the added temptation of Rad.ish doing our catering. Rad.ish is the health and eco-conscious catering business of Jessica Tatham, a Ballymaloe trained chef and regular visitor to Casa Rosa. Have a look at her website for a visual feast. www.rad-ish.co.uk Having completed chef training, Jessica has gone on to develop her own health and well-being based catering business. Her approach is to serve warm salads and raw food and to combine that with other very comforting solutions to restore the heart and soul after a day of hard labour in the studio. She will attempt to accommodate any nutritional requirements but please give good warning before you arrive.
The week will have a relaxed house party feel. Meals are a relaxed social event, eaten together with the team. Excellent Spanish wines will be available plus copious amounts of tea, coffee and other soft drinks.
